The Department of the Interior has delayed making a decision about Bears Ears National Monument and is still taking comments about the proposed review of all national monuments established since 1996. The comment period is open until July 10, 2017. Add your voice!

Call Senator Cardin (202-224-4524) and Senator Van Hollen (202-224-4654). Thank them for their unwavering opposition to TrumpCare but tell them that’s not enough. They need to resist: slow down Senate business by withholding consent, and prepare to filibuster by amendment until and unless there are public hearings on TrumpCare. (Sample call scripts are included in the kit.)

The Rockville City Council is expected to discuss and vote on the Trust ordinance at this meeting. We need a big, visible crowd to show the city council the people who live, work and play in Rockville demand this. We need to outnumber any opposition that decides to show up. Plan to arrive at 6 pm for solidarity rally in front of City Hall, and to be seated together. (more…)

There are 3 ways to pressure Gov. Hogan to do the right thing and join the US Climate Alliance.

On June 1, President Trump announced that the United States would leave the 2015 Paris Climate Accord.  Since then, 12 states and hundreds of US cities, including Baltimore, have joined the United States Climate Alliance, a bipartisan group committed to upholding the 2015 Paris Accord within their borders through sharing of information and best practices.  So far, while MD Gov. Larry Hogan has expressed support for the Paris Agreement and Maryland’s natural resources, he has not joined the US Climate Alliance.  In fact, his latest statement is “We’re not sure what the intention of the group is.” Umm, maybe he could ask someone to find out.

1.  Call Gov. Hogan at 410-974-3901 or 1-800-811-8336 and use the phone script below, adapted from one developed by our friends at Indivisible Montgomery:

You: Hi! I’m a Maryland resident and part of Do The Most Good Montgomery. My name is [NAME] and my street address is [ADDRESS]. I’d like to leave a message.
Staffer: [Response]
You: I’d like to thank the governor for his prior work to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Maryland. The U.S. Climate Alliance is a bipartisan organization of U.S. states committed to upholding the Paris climate agreement.  At least 12 other states, including Delaware and Virginia, and Washington D.C. have already joined.  Will the governor display real leadership and commit to joining the U.S. Climate Alliance?
Staffer: [Response]
You: It is critical the governor join the Alliance to enhance and amplify existing commitments to safeguard Maryland’s critical and fragile environment.
Staffer: [Response]
You: Thank you.

2.  Send a letter to Gov. Hogan here. If you’re not sure what to say, here is a sample letter.

3.  Sign the petition at

It’s important to show the world that while our President has gone rogue, the American people have not. That’s why the U.S. Climate is so important, and why having states with standards that are more ambitious than the now-abandoned US goal is so important. As a national leader in greenhouse gas emissions reductions, Maryland belongs with California, New York, Washington and other states that are leading my example. The commitments of states like ours are critical to the US being able to meet or exceed that discarded goal.

We are supporting this petition from ACLU to condemn Trump’s attack on affordable access to birth control.

A leaked draft rule threatens to gut the benefit that ensures all workplace insurance plans cover birth control with no co-pay – all under the guise of religious “liberty.” The anti-women’s health vendetta mounted by Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price, Vice President Mike Pence, and their anti-women gang is a coordinated assault on our rights and liberties. This rule perverts the definition of religious liberty and disrupts progress toward gender equality.

Add your name to condemn Trump’s attack on affordable access to birth control.

Call Rockville Mayor Bridget Donnell Newton (240-314-8291) and City Council Member Beryl Feinberg (240-314-8293). Ask to make an appointment to meet with them (groups of 2-3 is best). Both are currently hesitating to vote “yes”. If you can’t get an appointment or speak directly to Mayor Newton or Ms. Feinberg, leave a voicemail or hand deliver a letter. If possible, include personal stories and data to strengthen your position.

Hello, my name is ____________ and I live in ___________. I have a stake in the Rockville community because ____________. I am calling in support of the Rockville Fostering Community Trust Ordinance. I believe that it is an important step in ensuring that the policy of the Rockville police toward our immigrant community is properly codified. The ordinance will reduce confusion about the boundaries of the Rockville law enforcement policy vs the Federal Immigration enforcement policy and assure the citizens of the city that their elected officials are taking steps to make sure that Rockville’s policy toward immigrant citizens is clear, complies with Federal guidelines and ensures community trust in law enforcement.

The proposed ordinance is supported by the Fourth, Fifth,Tenth and Fourteenth Amendments to the Constitution as well as Supreme Court case law. It does not violate any Federal guidelines, including those of the recent executive order, so federal funding for the city should not be at risk. Finally, it ensures that local law enforcement funds will not be diverted to pay for work mandated to the federal government

Thanks for your time!

The ordinance will protect the civil rights of the immigrant community, encourage communication between immigrants and local enforcement and ensure that Rockville law enforcement funds will not be diverted to enforce Federal immigration law. Passage of this ordinance may influence passage of similar laws at county or state levels.
