Voters approved a constitutional amendment in 2008 whereby Casino revenues would be used to provide additional support for education, but a critical loophole in the law circumvented the voters’ intent. Casino revenue was used for schools, BUT other education funding was reduced!
DTMG and Strong Schools Maryland worked hard to close this loophole and get Measure One on the ballot. If approved by voters, the Maryland State Constitution will be amended to insure that casino revenues are used to supplement education funds and not to replace general funds for education. SUPPORT THIS BALLOT MEASURE WITH A YES VOTE QUESTION ONE AND SPREAD THE WORD. Additional information is available here.

October 16, 2018 – Ben Jealous received an endorsement from the Maryland chapter of NOW. He has released a new plan to ensure equal pay for women in Maryland, who right now are paid 84 cents for every dollar paid to men.
- That means Maryland women make over $10,000 less than their male counterparts, the equivalent of 79 more weeks of food, five more months of mortgage and utility payments, nearly 8 more months of rent, or more than 12 additional months of child care.
- The gap widens when you look at just women of color: Black women are paid 69 cents on the dollar, Latinas 47 cents on the dollar and Asian women 83 cents on the dollar. In Maryland, the study continues, women lose a combined total of more than $18.2 billion annually due to the pay gap.
- As governor, Jealous will work with the legislature to pass legislation to create inspectors in the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing, and Regulation that will request pay information from companies and conduct reviews if it appears systemic pay discrimination is occurring. These inspectors will ensure compliance and enforcement with all equal pay legislation in Maryland.
His platform includes various other proposals to address issues that disproportionately undermine women’s economic opportunities, including raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour and universal full-day pre-k to help with rising childcare costs. He has also released a proposal to ensure that a majority of his cabinet are women.

Ann Arundel County Delegate stated, “I am leaving the Republican Party today, because it is important for me to stand with a party that is fighting for equality for all Americans—minorities, the LGBTQ community, victims of gun violence, immigrants, women, Americans of all faiths, and communities being affected by climate change.” President Trump regularly attacks minorities, women and anyone who does not agree with him, and I can no longer remain a part of a party that condones his divisive rhetoric. It’s reprehensible.”
“We welcome Delegate Simonaire into the Democratic Party and I believe her reasons for becoming a Democrat reflect the feelings of many Marylanders in 2018, who feel the values of the Democratic Party are more representative of their own,” said Maryland Democratic Party chair Kathleen Matthews. “Voters are eager for a party that stands for opportunity, equality and respect for all people.”
