October 2018 DoTheMostGood and Strong Schools Maryland worked hard to get Measure One on the 2018 ballot. This measure corrects a fatal flaw in a previous measure approved by voters in 2008. That measure authorized video lottery operations for the primary purpose of raising additional money for public education, but a critical loophole in the law circumvented the voters’ intent. Casino revenue was used for schools, BUT other education funding was reduced! DTMG and Strong Schools Maryland worked hard to close this loophole and get Measure One on the 2018 ballot. It will amend the State Constitution to insure that casino revenues are used to supplement education funds and not to replace general education funds. If approved, it will provide additional revenue for Maryland’s many under funded schools.
September 2017 DoTheMostGood launched it’s Strong Schools Maryland Group. Strong Schools Maryland is a statewide advocacy campaign with the goal of building a world-class education system for all of Maryland’s pre-K-12 public school students. The campaign is engaging with stakeholders across the state to pass a comprehensive reform agenda that pushes all students to high levels while providing the supports necessary for every student to succeed. Groups of 10 are a key element of passing the reform agenda. We meet monthly, delving into a different aspect of school performance and improvement, completing an advocacy action each time and sending a representative to an in-person action each month. Watch this 2 minute video to see how the groups work.
The Baltimore Sun said education is going to be THE issue in the 2018 Maryland elections. Gubernatorial candidates are piling on top of each other to be identified as the “Education Governor”, and Governor Hogan is taking heat for funding vouchers and private schools at the expense of public schools.
We agree with Strong Schools Maryland that all students in the state of Maryland can learn at high levels when given the resources and opportunities to be successful, and all Maryland students deserve the opportunity to receive a world class education. We believe a comprehensive agenda focused on supporting kids before they get to school through college and obtaining a career is essential to building a system that works for all students.
Our group generally meets the third Tuesday of the month. For more information, send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org .
